"Mental Bandwidth" is referring, generally, to the amount of cognitive capacity that we have within our conscious control at a particular moment. We need bandwidth for many daily tasks and decisions, and particularly for learning and navigating the logistics of education.

There are many things beyond our control that can drain our mental bandwidth.
For example, poverty, racism, and other forms of marginalization both reduce and use up bandwidth. Physical and mental health conditions also reduce available bandwidth. |
Processing novel and complex information (learning) requires substantial bandwidth. Learners who are functioning with limited mental bandwidth due to circumstances beyond their control are at a distinct disadvantage when it comes to learning and academic success.
